I am currently in a course that deals with technology and how to incorporate it into the classroom. Since I don't have a classroom (yet), I want to be able to talk about goals for myself and what I will want to incorporate into my future classroom. In my college career, I have become familar with Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I have also taken courses that dealt with PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel. I am now learning new tools within technology and how to bring them to the classroom. For me, in an art room, I want to figure out ways that students can be creative and use technology at the same time.
With new websites out there, like 21st. Century Skills, they are offering new ideas about what and how kids should learn today. I really find global awareness to be something that is so important today. With art, students just don't understand how important other cultures and the history of art influence art today. In my classroom, I want to find ways for me to be able to inspire and engage my students with art history. This is something that I have been playing with and trying to find ways to make this subject interesting not only for students, but for me as well.
There is also a section of these 21st. Century Skills that deals with learning and innovation skills. This whole area, I think, really pertains to the art world. In an art room, students need to be able to feel like they can be creative, and they need to be challenged to think critically, and to be put in situations where they need to collaborate and communicate with peers. These are things that I will need to promote in my art classroom in the future.
A lot of these skills coincide with the ISTE standards for teachers. These standards help educators with guidelines for themselves and how they can incorporate different and new technologies in the classroom. These standards are something that I have not seen before this class and I think it should be something that is incorporated more in education courses at the college level. Since times are always changing and there are always new technologies being developed, these standards help teachers so that they know what to include in their curriculum.
